If you are selling food you are responsible for ensuring that it's safe to eat. We will carry out inspections to ensure that hazards are kept under control and to identify areas for improvement within your food business.
We will help you comply with relevant food hygiene legislation and provide recommendations on best practice. The frequency of future inspections is based on what we find.
We carry out inspections to ensure that food meets relevant legal requirements. There is a range of product specific legislation which relates to particular types of food produced. Food standards law covers the following aspects of food:
- quality
- composition
- labelling
- advertising and
- presentation
Enforcement Options
We will often deal with any minor breaches in an informal manner. If contraventions are more serious, or there is an immediate health risk, then there is a range of formal procedures that can be used if necessary.
Food Hygiene Information Scheme
Food Hygiene Information Scheme
We currently pilot the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS). This allows you to see results of food hygiene inspections. After each inspection we will score the premises based on their hygiene performance at the time of the visit.
We will give you a certificate stating the category the business is at within the scheme.
E. coli 0157
The Food Standards Agency's Guidance Document 'E. coli O157: Control of Cross Contamination' requires Food Business Operators to ensure that, where necessary, they are using appropriate disinfectants that meet the requirements of British Standards BS EN 1276:1997 or BS EN 13697:2001 to disinfect food contact surfaces and equipment.
